A reputable correctional program in Southern New Jersey is seeking a dedicated and experienced Medical Director / Physician to oversee clinical operations and ensure the delivery of high-quality medical services to an incarcerated population. This leadership opportunity is ideal for a physician with a strong foundation in primary care, public health, or emergency medicine and a passion for serving vulnerable communities.
Position Summary
The Medical Director is responsible for the oversight, supervision, and continuous quality improvement of medical services within the correctional facility. As the clinical leader on-site, the Medical Director will guide the healthcare team, maintain regulatory compliance, and serve as the key liaison between correctional leadership, external agencies, and the health services team. This role blends clinical responsibilities with administrative leadership and strategic direction.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care, including physical examinations, chronic care management, and emergency response.
- Supervise clinical staff including physicians, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals.
- Ensure compliance with NCCHC, ACA, state corrections standards, and contractual obligations.
- Oversee on-site chronic care clinics and off-site referrals to ensure continuity and appropriateness of care.
- Participate in policy development, staff hiring, credentialing, and ongoing education initiatives.
- Collaborate with correctional and public health officials to ensure ethical, effective, and responsive health services.
- Maintain accurate documentation and supervise medical records compliance.
- Provide 24/7 on-call medical consultation support.
Compensation: $300,000 – $315,000/yr (depending on experience)
Qualifications
- MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
- Completion of a U.S.-based residency program.
- Active, unrestricted medical license in the state of New Jersey.
- Current DEA, DEA-X (if applicable), and CDS registration.
- Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or related specialty preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in public health, emergency medicine, or primary care (correctional health experience preferred).
Skills & Competencies
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in electronic medical records (EMR) and basic computer applications.
- Ability to manage teams, prioritize tasks, and promote a patient-centered care model.
- CPR certification required.
